Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment responds to Oireachtas Committee vote

The Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment has said tonight’s vote by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment is “an important step forward”.

Earlier tonight, the Committee voted – by 15 votes to three – for the Eighth Amendment not to be retained in full in the Constitution.

Responding, Ailbhe Smyth, Convenor of the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment, said: “This is an important step forward for all those seeking full repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

“Tonight’s vote follows on from powerful medical evidence at the Oireachtas Committee hearings earlier today and last week.  The Committee has heard from medical and legal experts, who have highlighted how unworkable the Eighth Amendment is and the grave damage it has caused.

“It is time to remove from our Constitution a clause that has caused so much suffering and misery.  It is time to provide women with the reproductive healthcare services they need.  Tonight’s vote is a significant step in this direction.”
